Historical Background

The dubel-shlyupka, or “double boat,” was a crucial vessel of the Russian Imperial Navy during the Russo-Turkish War (1735–1739), particularly in the 1736–1737 campaigns on the Dnieper River. Designed for shallow, rapid-filled waters, these flat-bottomed boats were built primarily in Bryansk and measured about 17.5 meters long and 3.6 meters wide. They were propelled by 18 pairs of oars and two lateen-rigged masts, combining mobility with flexibility. Each vessel could carry around 50 soldiers, two small cannons, and was armed with six swivel-mounted two-pounder falcon guns. Used extensively by the Dnieper Flotilla under Rear Admiral Vasily Dmitriev-Mamonov, the dubel-shlyupkas played a vital role in riverine warfare, including the siege of the Ottoman fortress at Ochakiv in 1737. Their shallow draft allowed them to navigate narrow channels and provide effective fire support, despite delays caused by river conditions. Drawing on both European and local shipbuilding styles, their practical and durable design reflected Russia’s growing military innovation in its southern expansion. A well-preserved example of a similar Cossack boat can be seen today at the Zaporizhzhia Museum of Shipping-now faithfully reproduced in 1/72 scale by Master Korabel.
