1/48 Armor Photo-Etch

1/48 scale armor has grown significantly in recent years, driven by manufacturers like Tamiya and HobbyBoss releasing detailed military vehicle kits in this aircraft-friendly scale. At 1/48, tanks and armored vehicles are compact display models that pair perfectly with aircraft on the same shelf, and photo-etched upgrades bring these smaller armor builds up to the detail standard that modelers expect. PE sets at 1/48 armor scale focus on the most visible exterior components where plastic molding falls short.

Typical 1/48 armor PE upgrades include fender sets with correct thin-plate profile, engine deck grille meshes, turret basket netting, tool mounting brackets and straps, smoke grenade launcher details, and tow cable attachment hardware. While the range of available sets is smaller than at 1/35, manufacturers like Microdesign, Eduard, and Voyager Model produce targeted sets for the most popular 1/48 armor kits. These sets prioritize the high-impact exterior details that make the biggest visual difference at this scale.

Photo-etch at 1/48 armor scale is particularly effective because the smaller model size makes thick plastic parts even more conspicuous. A plastic fender that might be acceptable at 1/35 looks proportionally twice as thick at 1/48, breaking the illusion of scale. Brass PE parts maintain correct proportional thickness and allow clean, sharp bends that replicate the look of real stamped and welded steel plate. The improvement is especially dramatic on vehicles with prominent fenders, schurzen side skirts, or mesh stowage baskets.
